Collagenase is a type of protease that cleaves the bond between glycine and the neutral amino acid (X) within the Pro-X-Gly-Pro sequence, which is commonly found in collagen. Among proteases, only collagenase can degrade native triple-helical collagen fibers present in connective tissues such as skin, tendons, blood vessels and bone. Collagenase dissociation is suitable for the culture of human tumors, mouse kidneys, adult and fetal brains, and many other tissues including epithelial cells. Collagenase is relatively mild, performs efficient dissociation at physiological temperature and pH, and does not require mechanical agitation or specialized equipment. |
