Insulin-Transferrin-Selenium-Ethanolamine (ITS-X) is used as a basal medium supplement to reduce the amount of fetal bovine serum (FBS) used for culturing cells. The ITS-X solution is usually used in combination with 2–4% FBS to support cell types that require ethanolamine, such as bronchial epithelial cells. Insulin promotes the uptake of glucose and amino acids, adipogenesis, intracellular transport, and the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids. Transferrin is an iron carrier and also helps to reduce the toxic levels of oxygen free radicals and peroxides. Selenium (provided as sodium selenite) is a cofactor for glutathione peroxidase and other proteins and is used as an antioxidant in the medium. Ethanolamine is a precursor of phosphoglycerides and is crucial for the structure of the plasma membrane and organelles. |
