SYS1 (SYS1 Golgi-localized integral membrane protein homolog), also known as protein SYS1 homolog, C20orf169, dJ453C12.4 or dJ453C12.4.1, is a 156 multi-pass membrane protein which localizes to the Golgi apparatus membrane. SYS1 belongs to the SYS1 family and plays a role in protein trafficking while interacting with ARFRP1, possibly acting as a receptor for ARFRP1 or regulating the intracellular distribution of ARFRP1. The gene encoding SYS1 maps to human chromosome 20q13.12. Comprising approximately 2% of the human genome, chromosome 20 contains nearly 63 million bases that encode over 600 genes, some of which are associated with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy, ring chromosome 20 epilepsy syndrome and Alagille syndrome. Additionally, chromosome 20 contains a region with numerous genes which are thought important for seminal production and may be potential targets for male contraception. |
