As a member of the MYM domain gene family, ZNF258, also known as Zinc finger MYM-type protein 6, is a 1325 amino acid protein containing eight MYM-type zinc fingers. MYM (myeloproliferative and mental retardation) motifs closely resemble zinc-binding sequences and these domains are predicted to fold to bind two zinc atoms per motif. However, MYM domains are presumed to be more likely involved in protein-protein interactions than in DNA binding, which is similar to RING, LAP/PHD and LIM domains. ZNF258 is localized to the nucleus and is highly expressed in kidney, liver, skeletal muscle and heart. There are four characterized isoforms of ZNF258 that are produced as a result of alternative splicing events.
