Rabbit polyclonal to MMP1Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), also called matrixins, belong to a family of proteases that are essential for the breakdown of extracellular matrix (ECM). They are thus important in apoptosis, tumor cell growth, invasion, and metastasis; as well as angiogenesis and wound healing. Most MMPs contain common domain structures that include a signal sequence, a propeptide, a catalytic domain, and a hemopexin-like (Hpx) domain. MMP-1, also known as collagenase-1 or interstitial collagenase, is a protein that degrades ECM. High levels of MMP1 have been found in the synovial tissues and fluids of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Interleukin 1 Beta (IL-1 B) has been shown to stimulate the expression of MMP1, 2, 3 and 9.
