| Function | The phosphinothricin-N-acetyltransferase gene, a selectable marker gene in transgenic plants, can inactivate phosphinothricin (PPT). Phosphinothricin is a naturally occurring bacterial amino acid, as well as a low-toxicity, highly active and broad-spectrum non-selective herbicide. As a structural analog of glutamic acid, it irreversibly and competitively inhibits the activity of glutamine synthetase (GS), disrupts various metabolic processes involving GS, and ultimately leads to plant death. |
