An epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a 170-kDa glycoprotein formed from a single polypeptide chain of 1186 amino acids can be divided into a number of functional domains. The heavily glycosylated 622-amino acid residue amino-terminal extracellular domain contains the growth factor binding site. EGFR is a transmembrane receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) that mediates the biological signal of small polypeptide mitogens, including epidermal growth factor (EGF) and transforming growth factor-α.
