Phosphatidylinositol 4,5-biphosphate (PIP2) is a low-abundance membrane
phospholipid that functions in a variety of cellular processes, such as mem
brane trafficking, plasma membrane-cytoskeleton linkages, synaptic vesicle
recycling, second messenger signaling, cell adhesion and motility and regula
tion of proteins involved in phospholipid metabolism. It also stimulates the
Ca2+-activated ATPase, implicating that changes in the cellular concentration
of PIP2 may be important in regulating Ca2+ transport by the endoplasmic reti-
culum. PIP2 and intracellular Ca2+ regulate the taste transduction ion channel
TRPM5. PIP2 serves as an effector of multiple downstream proteins and its
levels are regulated by hormones. It may also serve as a second messenger
in the control of cytoskeleton-membrane adhesion. |
